1940’s

HGC credited with creating the Maryland Daffodil Society; participated fully in numerous war efforts; HGC members picked up first place prizes at the New York Garden Show; Initiated plans to make Lake Roland a bird sanctuary.

1930’s

HGC formalized club committees, codified bylaws, continued commitment to conservation, partnered with other regional and national clubs, and participated in prestigious garden and flower shows.

1920’s

HGC became a member of the Garden Club of America and the Federated Garden Club of Maryland; Original HGC Oak Tree planted at Ruxton Train Station.

1913

Hardy Garden Club (HGC) founded. The name inspired by a 1903 book: A Woman’s Hardy Garden. Mrs. Emily Viele Strother is named first president.

2010’s

2010, The GCA Freeman Medal awarded to Spigelia Marilandica as plant of the year, nominated by HGC member, Barbara Gould. 2013 Barbara chaired the prestigious GCA Meniece Conference, held at The U.S. National Arboretum, Wash. DC.

2020’s

HGC children’s book, A Young Botanist’s Guide to the Pin Oak published.

1990’s

Second history of HGC published.

2000’s

HGC spearheaded an impactful restoration project with the creation of the Meadowood Park Rain Garden in Baltimore County.

1980’s

HGC embarked on creating wedding flowers arrangements and hosted several workshops throughout the year.

1950’s

Post war, HGC resumed its focus on conservation, civic, and horticultural projects including a national effort to restrict roadside billboards.

1960’s - 1970’s

The HGC continues to expand its efforts to promote an interest in gardening, horticulture, and conservation among its members and the general public; participate in prestigious shows and significant public service projects; and raise awareness of the ever-increasing importance of protecting the environment. Year after year, the HGC has been led by dedicated officers and enthusiastic committee heads who are elected by the membership, knowledgeable in the art and science of gardening and horticulture, and expert in chosen areas of interest which include, but are not limited to: the iris, peony, daffodil, conservation, the environment, botanical arts, and more.
