History

Founded in 1913, the Hardy Garden Club (HGC) of Maryland has a long and illustrious history, spanning two centuries, which witnessed two World Wars, the modernization of industry and society, and the cultivation of an untold number of exciting new hybrids and varieties of plants and flowers, as well as the development of forward-thinking, environmentally responsible trends in horticulture and gardening. For over one hundred years, HGC is proud to have taken a leadership role in educating its members and the community in gardening best practices which beautify public and private spaces, while protecting and sustaining the natural world around us. HGC is a proud member of the Garden Club of America, the Federated Garden Club of Maryland, and the Maryland Daffodil Society, which HGC had a key role in founding.

Throughout the decades HGC members have participated in countless garden shows around the country, winning their fair share of national and regional awards, a record that continues to this day.

Since our inception, we have also enjoyed opportunities to collaborate with other garden clubs in the area to produce exciting competitions, stunning exhibits, artistic and educational workshops, and civic projects which enrich and benefit the general public.

And while all our members have a keen sense of public service and earthly stewardship, at the heart of every member is the sheer joy of gardening, the awe inspired with every new sprout and flowering bud, and a passion for the remarkable beauty our efforts produce. That love sustains us through the cold of winter and bursts forth with fervor every spring. That you can count on.
